On May 22nd, 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz made a bitcoin transaction that would be remembered for eternity.
Posting on Bitcointalk, Hanyecz wrote:
I’ll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas.. Like maybe 2 large ones so i have some left over for the next day
At the time of purchase, 10,000 BTC was equivalent to approximately $41 US, however, as of the BTC all-time-high on the 17th of December, 2017 the “Bitcoin Pizza” was worth $200,890,000 US.
The Bitcoin Pizza transaction is not only famous because of the value those BTC would have been, but it is also famous because it is the first known purchase of physical goods with Bitcoin.
Hanyecz has stated in earlier interviews that he does not regret using 10,000 BTC to purchase two pizzas.
The cryptocurrency community has now coined May 22nd as “Bitcoin Pizza Day.”
